This message comes to you as a host of information about exciting upcoming events, including the launch of a new project I’m calling undercurrent. This platform will serve as a space for local dance artists and organizers to submit information about their events, which will then be shared in a newsletter, creating a centralized list of dance happenings in the area.
While it’s still in its early stages, I’d love for you to check it out, make a submission, and subscribe to the newsletter. I’m energized by this project and hopeful that it will become a resource for community building and information sharing. I’m excited to see where it goes and would love for it to be a sustainable venture.
If you know of any email lists or networks that might benefit from this kind of information sharing, please reach out to me directly, either at my personal email or at undercurrentnc@gmail.com. I’d love to help spread the word!
Here are some events that I am personally organizing, putting on and connected to:
I am teaching a DANCE CLASS and YOGA CLASS at The Bridge Wellness center.
DANCE CLASS : Blends experiential anatomy, dance fundamentals, and creative improvisation. We'll begin by tuning into our bodies through guided explorations of anatomy, fostering a deeper connection to how we move. From there, we’ll dive into essential dance techniques that support strength building, balance, alignment, and fluidity. The class will also feature improvisation explorations that encourage creative expression and spontaneous movement. We’ll end with a fun and energizing group shake, releasing tension and bringing a sense of togetherness to our shared experience.
All levels are welcome!
WHEN: Mondays at 5:00pm
WHERE: The Bridge Wellness Center
YOGA CLASS : ENERGETIC FLOW
Take a refreshing midday break with this streamlined, hour-long class blending yoga, flow, and Chi Gong. Reconnect, recharge, and return to your day feeling balanced and energized. Perfect for all levels!
WHEN: Tuesdays at 12:00pm
WHERE: The Bridge Wellness Center
I have been working with Amanda K. Miller in bringing her work forward so here are some events I am putting on in collaboration with her and Culture Mill
Screening of:
Two Pears and its accompanying Documentary, Making of Two Pears
WHEN: September 29th, 6:30pm
WHERE: Culture Mill, Saxapahaw NC
DESCRIPTION: Two Pears is an exploration of themes such as personal relationships, emotional expression, and the nuances of human interaction. The documentary about the work delves into how Miller approaches choreography, including her collaboration with dancers, visual artists, composers, set and costume designers, and ideas for movement and the development of the piece itself.
Making of Two Pears sheds light on Miller's creative philosophy and her unique style, offering insights into her method of merging classical and contemporary dance in a fluid and expressive way. It's also reflective of her time with Pretty Ugly Dance Company, during which she cultivated a distinct voice in the world of contemporary dance.
“Two Pears is in 3 parts inspired by texts of Lucretius, Empedocles,Voltaire, Cesare Pavese and Seth Tillett. All speaking about the unpredictability and power of nature and the universe.
I thought to translate this through the vulnerability, fragility & love within movement. The rebellion and beauty of dancing off-balance, defying gravity and practicing silence. Acts of nature.( a smile defies gravity.)” - Amanda K. Miller
Imaginative Series: Landscape of Embodiment
with Amanda K. Miller
WHEN: October 3, 10, 17, 24, 5:30-7:30pm
WHERE: Culture Mill , Saxapahaw NC
DESCRIPTION: The Imaginative Series is an open, movement research platform for people who are interested in discovering deeper nuances in their craft. By applying Rudolph Laban’s 9-points system and a mathematical approach to movement, participants will be encouraged to release old habits and explore new territories, stepping across the borders of one’s imaginations and exploring the body’s three-dimensional physicality and voice. Through risk-taking, intuitive sensing, resonant response, and listening to the space within the music, there are opportunities to refine one’s vocabulary. Perhaps through this practice of shifting our perception we can explore a newfound balance of communication with both ourselves and our audiences.
